Don't give a burglar a hiding place while he's checking your windows. Keep bushes and shrubs trimmed low and away from windows and doors.

  • Make sure all porches and entrances are well-lit.    Put exterior lights on sensors so that they turn on automatically when it is dark.

  • Don't give burglars tools and ladders to enter your home -- always keep shed and storage doors locked.

  • Bolt your window air conditioners to the wall to prevent easy removal from the outside.

  • Put your lights on timers and stagger the times so that they turn on and off at different intervals.

  • If you rely on a cordless phone or phone system, keep a simple corded phone in the house for use in case of a power outage.

  • Always use the locks on your doors and windows, even if you'll only be gone for a few minutes.

  • Ask for identification from all service people and solicitors who come to your home.    If you are unsure, do not let them enter until you call and verify their identity.
